Nagpur Road Concretization Project Resumes After Prolonged Delays

After facing multiple delays, cement concretization work has finally recommenced on the remaining 1-kilometer stretch of road connecting Pratap Nagar Square to Orange City Street T-Point in Nagpur. This crucial infrastructure project, which had been stalled due to overlapping utility works, is now back on track with major obstacles cleared.

Overcoming Utility Work Bottlenecks

Nearly 75% of the road concretization work was already completed when the project encountered significant hurdles. Overlapping utility installations—including electric cables, pipelines, and storm water drains—created complications that forced work to halt temporarily. The storm drain construction proved particularly challenging, becoming the biggest bottleneck in the entire project.

Unseasonal rains further exacerbated delays, pushing back the timeline for completion. However, with these major hurdles now resolved, the Public Works Department (PWD) World Bank Division has initiated digging operations to lay the crucial storm water drain along the pending stretch.

Current Traffic Situation and Public Concerns

Currently, only one side of the road remains open to traffic, resulting in temporary congestion that has frustrated local residents and commuters. Kishore Uike, a Nagpur resident, expressed concerns about the ongoing situation: "Traffic jams have become routine, and there have been several near-misses due to the narrowed carriageway. The work should be expedited."

A garage owner located along the affected stretch noted the contrasting experiences with different sections of the project. "The portion from Pratap Nagar Square to London Street (now Orange City Street) was completed quickly and is of good quality," he said. "But this prolonged delay on the unfinished section has affected public perception of the entire project. Initially, we were thrilled about getting a new road, but this has turned into misery. With the reduced road width, many two-wheelers dangerously swerve near my garage entrance just to overtake vehicles."

Technical Specifications and Coordination

A senior Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) official revealed that the civic body plans to install shoulder paver blocks to enhance road safety and durability once the project advances. The PWD will also lay Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) over the sewer slab, but only after completing the main road concretization to the designated level to ensure uniformity across the entire stretch.

The official explained that during a recent coordination meeting, the NMC had raised objections about laying PQC directly over the drainage slab. In response, the PWD has proposed a revised design that includes provisions for PQC while accounting for future requirements. Once the storm water drain work concludes, the slab height will be adjusted proportionately to match the road level precisely.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

According to officials, the remaining work will now proceed without further interruptions and is expected to be completed soon. The Times of India had previously reported on November 14, 2025, that the final leg of concretization had begun, but subsequent challenges delayed progress.

After the storm water drain installation and proper alignment are achieved, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation will take over to complete the remaining road work, ensuring a smooth and consistent surface throughout the entire stretch from Pratap Nagar Square to Orange City Street T-Point.
