In a decisive response to a devastating accident, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a comprehensive city-wide survey to identify and secure dangerous roadside wells. This critical initiative follows the tragic incident earlier this month in Dindori taluka, where nine members of a family lost their lives after their car plunged into an open well.
Immediate Action Following Tragic Accident
The survey operation is being conducted by the NMC's Public Works Department (PWD) under direct instructions from Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri. The primary objective is to systematically assess all wells located along roads within city limits, identifying those that pose significant threats to motorists and pedestrians.
City Engineer Sanjay Agrawal has issued specific directives to all PWD engineers, mandating thorough surveys within their respective jurisdictions. Officials are required to submit detailed reports documenting all unsafe wells along roadways and ensure no hazardous wells remain uncovered or unprotected, particularly in areas with heavy vehicular traffic.
Comprehensive Safety Measures Planned
Once the survey identifies risky roadside wells, the NMC will implement immediate remedial measures. These will include either filling the wells completely or securing them with appropriate protective measures such as fencing or durable covers. The civic body will conduct additional assessments to determine the specific safety requirements at each identified location.

The survey initiative follows strong directives from Kumbh Mela Minister Girish Mahajan, who visited the Dindori accident site immediately after the tragedy. Minister Mahajan took serious cognizance of the incident and instructed all concerned authorities to conduct thorough surveys to identify dangerous roadside wells and ensure they are either filled or properly safeguarded.
NMC officials emphasized that the Dindori accident highlighted the severe risks posed by unattended and uncovered wells along roads, particularly during nighttime hours.
