A new government polyclinic is set to open at the Urban Community Health Centre (UCHC) in Shimlapuri, Ludhiana, by the end of July 2026, promising to significantly enhance healthcare access for residents in this densely populated area. Health officials confirmed that the facility will offer multiple specialist outpatient departments (OPDs) and physiotherapy services, aiming to reduce the burden on the overstretched Ludhiana Civil Hospital.
Comprehensive Services Under One Roof
The polyclinic will host departments for medicine, orthopaedics, skin diseases, gynaecology, and paediatrics, along with a dedicated physiotherapy unit staffed by trained professionals. A polyclinic bridges the gap between a small clinic and a large hospital, providing outpatient care across various specialties and enabling patients to access lab tests and specialist consultations in a single location.
Impact on Local Residents
Nearly two lakh residents from Shimlapuri and surrounding localities are expected to benefit. Tarsem Singh, a Shimlapuri resident, noted the current hardship: “The Civil Hospital is on the other end of the city. It takes nearly 45 minutes to reach the hospital and half of the day is spent seeing a doctor. We end up visiting a private facility.” Sunita Rani, another resident, expressed hope that the quick opening will save her from taking half-day leaves from work for medical visits.
Reducing Load on Civil Hospital
Health Department officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to expand community healthcare infrastructure. They emphasized that by bringing specialised services closer to people's doorsteps, the polyclinic will significantly reduce patient inflow at the Ludhiana Civil Hospital, which currently handles a large volume of outpatient cases from across the city.
Timeline and Implementation
The facility is expected to begin operations at the end of this month. Officials are finalising staff deployment and equipment procurement to ensure a smooth launch. The polyclinic will operate as a primary referral centre, handling cases that do not require inpatient admission, thus streamlining the healthcare delivery system in the region.
