Noida Power Department Accelerates Infrastructure Upgrades Under RDSS Scheme

The Noida power department has significantly accelerated its infrastructure modernization efforts under the central government's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). According to official statements, nine new 33/11 kV substations are expected to become fully operational within the next six months, marking a crucial phase in strengthening the city's power distribution network.

Comprehensive Substation Development Plan

These new substations are being constructed across multiple sectors including 63, 65, 32, and 144 as part of a comprehensive development strategy. The broader modernization initiative, which extends until 2027, encompasses a total of 19 planned substations designed to meet growing power demands and improve service reliability throughout Noida.

In addition to constructing new facilities, the department is undertaking substantial capacity enhancements at ten existing substations. This upgrade involves installing twelve additional transformers, each with a capacity of 10 MVA. Currently, these substations operate with two 10 MVA transformers, providing a total capacity of 20 MVA. Following the installation of the new transformers, their combined capacity will increase to 30 MVA, representing a significant boost to the local power infrastructure.

"As part of the project, the installation of additional transformers will significantly strengthen the distribution network and support future power demand," emphasized Vivek Kumar Patel, Superintending Engineer of the Noida power department under PVVNL.

Distribution Transformer Expansion

The department is simultaneously strengthening local distribution infrastructure through extensive transformer installations. Preliminary work for 556 distribution transformers of 250 kVA capacity has already been completed, with actual installations scheduled to commence this week across sectors including 50, 45, 38, 43, and 122.

Furthermore, more than 500 additional transformers will be installed across various sectors to enhance supply reliability, while approximately 450 existing transformers will be upgraded from 250 kVA to 400 kVA in areas experiencing higher power demand. This dual approach of new installations and upgrades ensures that the distribution network can handle both current requirements and anticipated future growth.

Advanced Fault Management Systems

To improve fault management and ensure uninterrupted power supply, the department plans to install 1,700 Ring Main Units (RMUs). These specialized units provide alternative supply routes during feeder faults, minimizing service disruptions and enhancing overall network resilience.

Currently, 475 plinths for RMUs are ready for installation, with approximately 50 units already delivered to project sites. Trial installations are expected to begin later this week, marking another step forward in the city's power infrastructure modernization.

Financial Approval and Technological Integration

In September 2024, the Union Power Ministry approved funding of Rs 1,313.5 crore for Noida under the RDSS program. This substantial financial support enables comprehensive system augmentation, SCADA-based monitoring implementation, and smart technology integration throughout the power network.

The project's technological components are specifically designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance service reliability, and ensure long-term sustainability of Noida's power distribution system. These upgrades represent a forward-looking approach to urban power management that anticipates future needs while addressing current infrastructure challenges.
