Noida Power Department Proposes Major Infrastructure Upgrade
The Noida power department has initiated a significant move to bolster the electricity distribution network in Gautam Buddha Nagar (GB Nagar) district. In response to escalating power demands, particularly in rural areas, the department is seeking approval and funding for the establishment of two new 33/11 kV substations. These facilities are slated for construction in Dadri and Jewar, aiming to address the growing load requirements ahead of the summer season when peak demand is projected to exceed 3,000 MW.
Budget Request and Comprehensive Plan
As part of a broader business strategy, the department has submitted a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) requesting a budget of Rs 70 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27. This substantial allocation is intended not only for the new substations but also for a series of critical infrastructure enhancements. According to Praveen Kumar, executive engineer at the Noida power department, the funding will support multiple initiatives designed to modernize and strengthen the power grid.
Key components of the Rs 70 crore plan include:
- Capacity enhancement of ageing transformers to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Replacement of outdated cables and poles to reduce transmission losses and prevent outages.
- Bifurcation of feeders in high-load areas to distribute electricity more evenly and prevent overloading.
Kumar emphasized that while a significant portion of this work will focus on rural belts such as Dankaur, Dadri, and Jewar, some urban areas with dense populations will also benefit from these upgrades. This dual approach ensures that both rural and urban sectors receive necessary improvements to meet their specific power needs.
Simultaneous Modernization Efforts
In addition to the proposed projects under the Rs 70 crore budget, the Noida power department is concurrently implementing modernization works in urban areas through the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Kumar highlighted that these efforts will run simultaneously, creating a comprehensive upgrade across the entire district. The integration of both schemes aims to create a more resilient and efficient power distribution system capable of handling future demand surges.
The department is currently awaiting approval from UPPCL for the budget, which is expected by March. Once granted, construction of the new substations and commencement of other repair and enhancement works will begin promptly. This timely execution is crucial to prepare for the anticipated increase in electricity consumption during the summer months.
This infrastructure push reflects a proactive approach by the Noida power department to ensure reliable power supply and support the region's growth, particularly in underserved rural communities.
