NWKRTC Expands CCTV Coverage to 1,000 Additional Buses Following Positive Results

In a significant move to bolster passenger safety and operational efficiency, the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has announced plans to install front-facing CCTV cameras on 1,000 more buses. This decision comes after the successful implementation of onboard cameras on existing buses demonstrated tangible benefits in accident analysis and claims management.

Building on Proven Success

Currently, approximately 1,300 newly inducted NWKRTC buses are equipped with front-facing CCTV cameras. These cameras have proven instrumental in providing clear visual evidence of road conditions, driver actions, and the behavior of other vehicles during incidents. Officials report that this footage has enabled more accurate assessment of accidents, leading to targeted corrective measures such as driver counseling, route-based safety reviews, and enhanced monitoring of high-risk stretches.

The corporation has already floated a tender for the project and expects to complete the procurement process within one week. Installation will follow shortly thereafter, with plans to gradually increase the number of buses with CCTV coverage over time.

Financial and Safety Implications

Prior to the installation of CCTV cameras, NWKRTC reportedly paid nearly Rs 65 crore annually toward Motor Vehicle Claims (MVC). Many claims were difficult to contest due to insufficient documentation or reliable proof regarding accident circumstances. With CCTV footage now available from equipped buses, the corporation has been able to counter certain claims with factual evidence, reducing financial burdens and ensuring fairer liability determinations.

According to sources, a significant number of accident cases originate from the front side of buses, making front-facing cameras particularly effective in capturing event sequences leading to collisions. Based on this trend, NWKRTC plans to extend camera coverage to more buses, especially those operating on interstate routes, halt services, and long-distance operations where exposure to highway traffic and varied driving conditions is higher.

Strategic Expansion for Enhanced Oversight

NWKRTC currently operates a fleet of about 5,300 buses. By expanding CCTV coverage to an additional 1,000 buses, the corporation aims to enhance safety oversight across a larger portion of its network while improving evidence-based reporting and claims management capabilities.

Priyanga M, Managing Director of NWKRTC, emphasized the effectiveness of existing CCTV installations. "The new buses inducted to NWKRTC had a facility of CCTV in front, which has proved effective in analysing accidents and also in collecting evidence to challenge in court," she said. "Looking at this, the corporation plans to equip more buses with CCTVs on the front side."

She added, "In a week or two, the tender process will be over. Later, the installation of CCTVs on an additional 1,000 buses will be taken up. Gradually, the number of buses with CCTVs will be increased."

This initiative represents a proactive approach to leveraging technology for public transportation safety, potentially serving as a model for other transport corporations across India.
