The Municipal Corporation of Patiala (MC) has been honored with the prestigious SKOCH Award for its exceptional work in environment conservation and expanding green cover, marking the first time a municipal corporation in Punjab has received this award in the environment category.
Award Ceremony and Recognition
The award was presented on June 20 in New Delhi, where Joint Commissioner Manreet Rana, along with urban planners Jagdeep Singh and Shubham Jindal, accepted the accolade. The SKOCH Award, established in 2003 by the SKOCH Group, recognizes institutions and organizations that make significant contributions to governance, development, and public service delivery across India.
Green Initiatives and Forest Development
Under a government-backed initiative to preserve the environment and increase forest cover, the Patiala MC developed forests spanning 57 acres and created 10 kilometers of walking trails throughout the city. The project included the establishment of two Miyawaki forests covering 4.5 acres—one opposite Phulkian Press and another near the MRF Centre. Additionally, three conventional forests were developed: 29 acres in the army area, 12 acres opposite the Toyota agency, and seven acres near the Verka factory.
Selection Process
As part of the rigorous selection process, Joint Commissioner Manreet Rana delivered a detailed presentation before a high-level jury from the SKOCH Institution, highlighting the project’s environmental impact and achievements. Following a two-stage evaluation, the Patiala MC’s project was selected for the award.
Official Reactions
Mayor Kundan Gogia, Commissioner Pooja Syal Grewal, and Additional Commissioner Simarpreet Kaur expressed satisfaction over the achievement and congratulated the project team and residents. According to the officials, this recognition underscores the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability and sets a benchmark for other municipalities in Punjab.
