Patna District Magistrate Reviews Traffic and Anti-Encroachment Operations

District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M conducted a comprehensive review of traffic management and anti-encroachment operations in Patna on Friday, directing officials to intensify enforcement measures and improve inter-departmental coordination to address civic challenges.

Significant Fines Collected from Enforcement Drives

Officials presented detailed data during the meeting, revealing that 253 enforcement drives were conducted between April 2025 and April 13, 2026. These operations resulted in the collection of fines exceeding Rs 2 crore. A substantial portion of this amount—over Rs 1.14 crore—was recovered specifically from encroachment violators, with authorities seizing 1,978 items during these actions. Simultaneously, the traffic police collected Rs 1.57 crore for various traffic rule violations, highlighting the scale of enforcement activities across the city.

Targeted Actions and Infrastructure Monitoring

The District Magistrate issued specific directives to key officials, including the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) and the Additional District Magistrate (City Management). He instructed them to identify critical congestion points throughout Patna and implement targeted interventions to alleviate traffic bottlenecks. A major emphasis was placed on ensuring the full functionality of the city's surveillance infrastructure.

Thiyagarajan S M specifically mandated that all 3,300 CCTV cameras under the Integrated Traffic Management System remain operational at all times. This sophisticated system includes 473 red-light violation detection cameras and 150 automatic number plate recognition units strategically installed across 415 locations throughout Patna, forming a comprehensive network for traffic monitoring and enforcement.

Comprehensive Strategy for Road Management

The review meeting outlined a multi-faceted approach to urban management. The DM emphasized the necessity of regular patrolling by enforcement teams and the systematic identification of designated vending zones to organize street commerce. He ordered the removal of both temporary and permanent encroachments from major arterial roads, specifically naming Nehru Path, Gandhi Maidan, and Atal Path as priority corridors requiring immediate attention.

Officials received strict instructions to enforce no-parking zones without exception, close unauthorized road cuts that contribute to traffic disruptions, and ensure strict compliance with established one-way traffic systems to improve flow and safety.

Transport Sector Enforcement and Inter-Agency Coordination

The District Transport Officer was directed to conduct specialized drives targeting unauthorized parking, overspeeding vehicles, and irregular operations of public transport vehicles, particularly e-rickshaws and buses that frequently violate regulations.

The meeting also highlighted the critical importance of coordination between multiple agencies for long-term urban improvement. The District Magistrate stressed enhanced collaboration between the Patna Municipal Corporation, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the Road Construction Department to effectively implement road widening projects and urban beautification initiatives that would benefit the entire city.

High-Level Participation in Review

The significant meeting was attended by senior police and administrative officials representing key areas of Patna, including Patna Sadar, Danapur, and Patna City subdivisions, ensuring that enforcement strategies would be implemented consistently across different zones of the urban landscape.
