Electricity supply to several civic offices in Phagwara, including the Municipal Library, the Water Supply and Sewerage Board billing section, and the Municipal Corporation's Engineering Branch, has been disconnected reportedly due to non-payment of electricity dues, causing significant inconvenience to visitors and disrupting public services.
Affected offices and public impact
The power outage has severely affected the Municipal Library, where residents come to read books. Visitors reported that the lack of electricity has created an unsuitable reading environment. Similarly, consumers visiting the Water Supply and Sewerage Board office to pay water and sewerage bills faced difficulties as office operations were hampered. The disruption has also impacted the routine administrative work of the Municipal Corporation's engineering wing.
PSPCL official unaware of disconnection
When contacted, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) Executive Engineer Hardeep Kumar said he was not aware of the reported disconnections. Speaking to The Tribune on Thursday, he stated that the PSPCL had installed pre-paid smart meters in government offices, indicating that the matter would need to be verified.
Residents demand immediate resolution
The power disconnections have sparked concern among local residents, who have urged authorities to resolve the issue without delay. They emphasized that public institutions such as libraries and utility billing centres provide essential services to citizens and should not remain affected by administrative or financial issues, particularly when members of the public depend on them for daily needs.
