The Punjab Government has delegated additional powers to the Phagwara Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), who will now oversee the functioning of all public offices and ensure the implementation of development projects in the subdivision.
Chief Minister's Announcement
The move comes days after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the ADC would be vested with powers exercised by a deputy commissioner in a district. He had made this statement at a Lok Milni programme after local residents demanded district status for the subdivision.
Relief for Residents
Following the decision, several key administrative works will be handled at the subdivision level, providing relief to local residents who will no longer need to travel to the Kapurthala district headquarters for most services.
Scope of Powers
The orders state that the ADC will also be responsible for maintaining law and order, supervising the disposal of revenue cases, addressing issues concerning the Stamp and SARFAESI Acts, and handling matters related to the Food Safety Department. Additionally, the ADC has the authority to renew and grant arms licences, address public grievances, issue freedom fighter certificates, countersign certificates, grant permission for fireworks, and oversee marriage registrations.
Implementation and Staffing
Deputy Commissioner Akash Bansal has directed the ADC to ensure all services are delivered on time. He also mentioned that the district administration has written to the government seeking additional staff to facilitate the smooth implementation of the new arrangement.
