Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains conducted a surprise inspection of Moga's cleanliness on Tuesday while passing through the city en route to Muktsar district for a public function. Following the inspection, he announced that he would issue a show-cause notice to the Municipal Commissioner of Moga, citing unsatisfactory cleanliness standards.
Minister's Observations During Inspection
Sharing details on X (formerly Twitter), Bains stated that he interacted with residents during his visit and observed several open garbage dumping points across the city. He noted that the level of cleanliness was "not up to the mark" and directed municipal authorities to take immediate corrective action.
"During my morning inspection in Moga today, I interacted with locals and found cleanliness not up to the mark, with open garbage dumping points across the city. I am issuing a show-cause notice to the Municipal Commissioner, Moga. No compromise on cleanliness," Bains posted.
Context of the Action
The action underscores the state government's focus on improving urban sanitation. On June 8, Bains had launched 'Mission Clean Punjab', a technology-driven cleanliness campaign that requires civic officials to conduct daily field inspections from 7 am to 8 am. The surprise inspection in Moga aligns with this initiative, demonstrating the minister's hands-on approach to enforcing sanitation standards.
Impact and Next Steps
The show-cause notice requires the Municipal Commissioner to explain the failure to maintain cleanliness. The minister's directive for immediate corrective action indicates that the state government will not tolerate lapses in sanitation. Residents of Moga have expressed hope that the inspection will lead to tangible improvements in waste management and overall cleanliness in the city.
