The Karnataka government is facing pressure to revise the egg price allocated under the mid-day meal scheme in Tumakuru district. An association has urged the state to either increase the rate or take over direct procurement and supply of eggs to schools, mirroring the arrangement for other food items under the scheme.
Demand for Price Revision
The association representing local suppliers and stakeholders argued that the current egg price is insufficient to cover rising costs. They highlighted that the fixed rate has not been updated in line with market fluctuations, making it difficult for suppliers to continue providing quality eggs. According to the association, the price per egg should be revised to reflect current market rates to ensure sustainability.
If revision is not feasible, the association demanded that the Education Department directly procure and supply eggs to schools. This would eliminate intermediaries and ensure consistent quality and pricing, similar to the system used for rice, pulses, and vegetables under the mid-day meal scheme.
Impact on Students
The mid-day meal scheme serves millions of children across Karnataka, with eggs being a crucial source of protein. Any disruption in supply could affect the nutritional intake of students. The association emphasized that timely action is needed to avoid interruptions in the program.
As of now, the Education Department has not issued an official response. However, sources indicate that the matter is under consideration. The demand comes amid broader discussions on improving the mid-day meal scheme's efficiency and nutritional value in the state.
