Shillong: In the wake of the circulation of “fake news” regarding LPG shortage, the office of the deputy commissioner (supply), East Khasi Hills District, Shillong, has advised people against ‘panic buying’ of fuel and LPG cylinders.
An official statement issued on Tuesday informed residents that “contrary to rumours and fake news” circulating on social media concerning an alleged shortage and increase in the prices of petrol and diesel, the situation is being “closely monitored” by the district administration, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure availability and distribution of fuel and LPG across the district.
“Citizens are advised not to believe or circulate unverified information and to refrain from panic buying or hoarding of essential fuel supplies. The public is requested to rely only on official government communications and updates for accurate information,” an official advisory read.
The East Khasi Hills district administration has cautioned that “strict action” would be taken against individuals found spreading false information, rumours or misleading content that may create unnecessary panic among the public.
Background of the Issue
Rumours about a potential shortage of LPG and fuel have been circulating widely on social media platforms in recent days. These unverified claims have led to increased anxiety among residents, prompting some to engage in panic buying and hoarding of essential supplies. The district administration has stepped in to reassure the public that there is no shortage and that fuel and LPG supplies are adequate.
Measures Taken by Authorities
The administration has deployed teams to monitor fuel stations and LPG distributors to ensure smooth supply. Regular updates are being issued through official channels to counter misinformation. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious posts or messages to the authorities.
The advisory also emphasizes that spreading fake news is a punishable offence under relevant laws, and offenders will face legal consequences. The administration urges everyone to verify information before sharing it further.
Residents can check official government websites or contact the deputy commissioner's office for authentic updates regarding fuel and LPG availability. The public is reminded that panic buying only exacerbates the situation and creates unnecessary strain on supply chains.
