Tambaram Bus Terminus in Tamil Nadu Set for Major Rs 7 Crore Overhaul

The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has announced a significant Rs 7 crore modernization project for the heavily congested Tambaram bus terminus. This initiative aims to address long-standing civic and traffic issues that have troubled commuters for years, with work scheduled to commence in April and a target completion date before the onset of the monsoon season.

Addressing Critical Congestion and Infrastructure Deficiencies

The bus terminus, a vital transportation hub, currently handles over 500 daily bus trips and serves more than 10,000 commuters each day. It connects key suburbs such as Padappai, Maraimalai Nagar, and Sriperumbudur with core city areas including Anna Nagar. However, the facility has been severely hampered by unauthorized vendors occupying large portions of the premises, restricting pedestrian movement and exacerbating internal congestion.

Residents have consistently flagged the poor state of amenities at the terminus. Issues include:

  • Only one poorly maintained paid public toilet located near the market.
  • Buses parked haphazardly, blocking traffic flow and creating safety hazards.
  • A general lack of basic facilities for the high daily footfall.

Comprehensive Upgrade Plan Details

Corporation Commissioner S Balachander confirmed that tenders have been floated for the restoration work. The comprehensive revamp will include:

  1. Installation of a new roof to provide better shelter for commuters.
  2. Improved lighting systems to enhance safety and visibility.
  3. Deployment of CCTV cameras for increased security surveillance.
  4. Strict regulations allowing only registered stalls inside the terminus, with action planned against unauthorized vendors.

Community and Activist Input for Future Improvements

Local activists have highlighted additional concerns, noting that many stretches lack proper bus shelters, forcing commuters to wait in the sun. They have urged the corporation to explore revenue generation through advertisements on shelters, medians, and streetlights, which could fund further improvements and maintenance.

This Rs 7 crore overhaul represents a critical step toward decongesting the terminus and enhancing the commuting experience for thousands of daily users. By addressing encroachments and upgrading infrastructure, the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation aims to create a more efficient and user-friendly public transport hub ahead of the challenging monsoon period.
