Tambaram Corporation Invests 7.5 Crore in New Park Development

In a significant move to enhance urban greenery and recreational facilities, the Tambaram Corporation in Chennai has allocated 7.5 crore for the construction of eight new parks across the region. This initiative aims to expand green spaces and provide more public amenities for residents.

Locations and Features of the New Parks

The new parks will be established in key areas including East Tambaram, Perungalathur, Pallavaram, Thiruneermalai, and Irumbuliyur. Each park is designed to cater to diverse age groups and community needs.

  • Play Areas for Children: Dedicated zones with safe and engaging equipment.
  • Recreational Spaces for the Public: Open areas for walking, relaxation, and social gatherings.
  • Open Gyms for Senior Citizens: Fitness equipment tailored for older adults to promote health and wellness.

To boost environmental sustainability, native tree species such as pungai, marutham, and neem will be planted, enhancing biodiversity and improving air quality.

Enhanced Safety with CCTV Surveillance

All new parks will be equipped with CCTV cameras, monitored from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). This surveillance system is expected to prevent vandalism and misuse, ensuring a secure environment for visitors. Officials emphasize that this technology will help maintain order and safety in public spaces.

Background on Tambaram's Park Infrastructure

Currently, the Tambaram Corporation manages approximately 100 parks, a number lower than the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). A senior official explained that in earlier years, the civic body faced funding shortages, which delayed park development. "Now that the corporation has a surplus budget, more parks will be developed," the official stated, highlighting a shift in priorities towards urban beautification.

Additional Plans for Sensory Parks

Beyond the eight new parks, the corporation has planned four sensory parks with a budget of 24 crores. These specialized parks are designed for children and individuals with disabilities, featuring inclusive elements.

  1. Stepping Stones and Infinity Walkways: Made from materials like sand, pebbles, wood, fibre, and concrete to stimulate sensory experiences.
  2. Accessible Play Equipment: Wheelchair-friendly swings, sand banks, and ground-level merry-go-rounds for visually impaired, autistic, and wheelchair-bound children.
  3. Soft Fibre Flooring: To reduce injury risks from falls, ensuring a safe play environment.
  4. Wheelchair-Accessible Basketball Court: With hoops at two heights, including a lower hoop for children using wheelchairs.

Resident Concerns Over Park Maintenance

Despite these developments, residents have raised concerns about the poor maintenance of existing parks. V Saritha, secretary of the Ganesh Nagar Residents Welfare Association, pointed out issues in areas like Irumbuliyur, Hasthinapuram, and Camp Road.

"After 6pm, many of these parks are used for illegal activities," she said, urging the corporation to ensure regular upkeep. Saritha also suggested coordinating with traffic police for night patrols to enhance safety and prevent misuse.

This comprehensive park development plan reflects Tambaram Corporation's commitment to improving quality of life through green initiatives, though challenges in maintenance remain to be addressed.
