The Tirunelveli city corporation has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a railway contractor after tonnes of food waste, food packaging plastics, and other waste collected from trains were found dumped in Nainarkulam, Tirunelveli. The action was taken following an inspection in ward 14, where corporation officials led by city welfare officer N Balasubramaniam visited the site in the Thachanallur zone and discovered that waste had been dumped via trucks by the contractor.
Separate Penalty in Melapalayam Zone
In a separate incident in the Melapalayam zone, a septic tank owner located opposite the Porunai museum was fined Rs 6,000 for discharging sewage water in a manner considered harmful to the public. The order was issued by the city welfare officer under relevant regulations.
Strict Warnings from Corporation Commissioner
Corporation commissioner Monika Rana issued a stern warning, stating that if food waste is found to be illegally dumped in waterbodies, public places, or riverbanks within the four zones of the corporation, strict actions will be taken. These include confiscation of vehicles, imposition of fines on both house and vehicle owners, and initiation of stringent legal proceedings against the offenders.
The corporation urged citizens to report any such illegal dumping activities to help maintain cleanliness and prevent environmental hazards in the city.
