Uttar Pradesh Government Advances Campaign to Revive Dwindling Small Rivers
In a significant move to breathe new life into the state's diminishing water bodies, the Uttar Pradesh government is pushing forward with a targeted campaign to restore the Chamraura river, an ancient watercourse flowing through Pratapgarh district. This initiative is part of a broader effort to identify and rejuvenate endangered rivers across the region, as emphasized by district officials.
Focus on the Ancient Chamraura River
District Magistrate of Pratapgarh, Shiv Sahay Awasthi, confirmed that the Chamraura river has been selected for restoration in alignment with the government's intent. Spanning a total length of 24 kilometers within Pratapgarh district, this river is recognized as one of the most prominent ancient rivers in the area. It originates in the village of Para Hamidpur, located within the Sandwa Chandrika development block, and eventually merges with the Sai river in the Ranjitpur gram panchayat area of Chilbila.
To ensure the unimpeded flow of its waters, a detailed project report (DPR) has been meticulously prepared. The river traverses through ten gram panchayats, including villages such as Para Hamidpur, Lohangpatti, Gobari, Sangrampur, Purabpatti, Raghunathpur, Kamas, Pithpur, Gode, and Ranjipur (Chilbila), highlighting its extensive reach and ecological importance.
Collaborative Efforts and Proposed Budget
Deputy Commissioner of MGNREGA for Pratapgarh, Santosh Singh, announced that the revitalization work will commence from Para Hamidpur, with a proposed budget of Rs3 crore. This campaign will see collaboration from various government departments, including MGNREGA, rural development, irrigation, forestry, horticulture, land conservation, geology, and minor irrigation. The administration has adopted an inclusive approach, appealing to voluntary organizations, groups of village heads, public representatives, and women's self-help groups to come forward and extend their cooperation.
Key activities planned as part of this restoration effort include excavation work, tree plantation, and the construction of check dams and embankments. These measures aim to enhance water management and ensure the river's long-term sustainability.
Expert Insights on Community Involvement
River expert Samaj Shekhar emphasized the necessity of executing these activities on a gram sabha (village assembly) basis. For effective water management, he stressed the importance of interconnecting ponds linked to the river and ensuring active participation from the local community. This grassroots involvement is crucial for the success of such environmental initiatives, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.
The campaign represents a proactive step by the Uttar Pradesh government to address water scarcity and ecological degradation, setting a precedent for future river restoration projects in the state.
