Uttar Pradesh Enforces Mandatory Expiry Date Stamping on Eggs
The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a new regulation making it compulsory for egg producers to stamp each egg with its expiry date, effective from April 1. This initiative aims to enhance food safety and consumer awareness across the state.
Key Details of the New Rule
Under this directive, eggs must display both the expiry date and the date on which they were laid. Traders and farmers who fail to comply will face strict penalties, including the destruction of their produce or the eggs being stamped as "not fit for human consumption," according to officials from the animal husbandry department.
Safety Guidelines for Egg Storage
An egg is considered safe for consumption within two weeks of laying if stored at an ambient temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius. For longer storage, eggs can last up to five weeks when kept at temperatures between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. As per Food Safety and Drug Administration rules, eggs cannot be stored with vegetables in cold storage due to differing temperature requirements.
Infrastructure Challenges
Currently, Uttar Pradesh has only two dedicated cold storages for eggs, located in Agra and Jhansi. This limited infrastructure poses challenges for proper storage and compliance with the new regulations.
Government's Rationale
Additional Chief Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Mukesh Meshram, stated, "It was found that in many cases rules were not being adhered to. Consumers were also unaware of it." This move is part of broader efforts to improve food safety standards and ensure transparency in the egg supply chain.
Impact on Producers and Consumers
The new rule is expected to:
- Increase accountability among egg producers and traders.
- Empower consumers with better information about egg freshness.
- Reduce health risks associated with consuming expired eggs.
This regulation aligns with ongoing initiatives to strengthen food safety protocols in Uttar Pradesh, addressing gaps in compliance and public awareness.
