UP Government Approves Rehabilitation Package for Bahraich Village After Tragic Boat Accident
The Kaudiyala river in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district turned into a river of sorrow on October 29 last year when it swallowed nine villagers who were crossing it in a boat. This tragic incident highlighted the severe challenges faced by the 136 families living on the river's edge in Bharthapur village, who had no access to proper roads and faced annual flooding events.
Chief Minister's Intervention and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan
In response to this tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister visited the affected village on November 2 and met with the grieving families. Following this visit, the state cabinet, led by the Chief Minister, has now approved a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to provide long-term stability for the displaced community.
The boat tragedy has been officially declared a disaster by state authorities, paving the way for special assistance measures. The rehabilitation package includes multiple components designed to ensure sustainable resettlement for all affected families.
Land Allocation and Housing Development
The Bahraich district administration, in coordination with various government departments, has identified 1.7 hectares of land in Semarhana gram panchayat under Mihinpurwa tehsil to serve as the new residential zone for the displaced families. This land consists of six plots that will be allocated free of cost to the affected families.
Each of the 136 families will receive a residential plot measuring 748 square feet (22x34 feet). The construction of homes will be carried out under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), with supervision from the rural development department. Additional housing support will come from the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, ensuring comprehensive coverage through both central and state government schemes.
Infrastructure Development and Essential Amenities
The resettlement site will feature complete civic infrastructure developed by multiple government agencies. The Public Works Department and Jal Jeevan Mission will work together to provide roads, electricity, drinking water facilities, and sanitation systems.
Beyond basic infrastructure, the government has committed to ensuring the provision of additional essential amenities including internet connectivity, drainage systems, and other basic facilities through coordinated efforts of the rural development department, Jal Jeevan Mission, and related agencies.
Special Considerations for Forest Land Residents
For those families whose original homes were located on forest land, the forest department will provide necessary rehabilitation packages to ensure their smooth transition to the new settlement. This demonstrates the government's comprehensive approach to addressing the diverse circumstances of all affected families.
The rehabilitation plan represents a significant step toward providing permanent safety and stability for the villagers who have endured annual flooding and inadequate infrastructure for years. By addressing both immediate housing needs and long-term infrastructure requirements, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to prevent similar tragedies in the future while improving living conditions for the affected community.
