In a decisive move to enforce cleanliness norms, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) sealed a shop in the historic walled city area on Monday for littering the road outside its premises. The dairy outlet, which sells ice cream and other summer favorites, was only permitted to reopen after the owner paid a substantial fine of Rs 5,000.
Early Morning Inspection Uncovers Violation
The violation was discovered during an early morning inspection conducted by VMC officials in the old city. Suresh Tuver, the In-charge Deputy Municipal Commissioner for the East Zone, explained that officials have been specifically instructed to carry out these inspections to catch such infractions. During one such round, Tuver and his team found cups, wrappers, and various other types of waste strewn haphazardly outside Shri Ramkrupa Store near Mandvi.
"The shop remains open late into the night, and waste from such establishments is collected twice daily. This should not happen," Tuver stated. He added that it appeared the shop had neglected to clean the area, leaving the waste exposed. The littering may have been done under the assumption that the morning street sweeping would clear it away, but this did not excuse the violation.
Swift Penalty and Clear Message
The shop was sealed immediately following the discovery and remained closed until Monday afternoon. Around noon, the shopkeeper paid the Rs 5,000 fine, after which the seal was removed, allowing the business to resume operations. Tuver emphasized that this strict action was taken to send a clear and unambiguous message.
"We took strict action to send a clear message that littering will not be tolerated. Similar action will continue in the coming days," he warned, indicating that the VMC is committed to maintaining public cleanliness and will not hesitate to penalize offenders.
