Weekend Traffic Chaos Grips South Delhi Landmarks Amid Festival Rush
New Delhi witnessed severe traffic disruptions over the weekend, with south Delhi areas around popular landmarks such as Sunder Nursery, Humayun’s Tomb, and Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah experiencing intense congestion. The heavy influx of visitors, combined with the ongoing Bharat Tribes Fest at Sunder Nursery, contributed to significant gridlock on surrounding roads.
Commuters Face Extended Delays and Frustration
Commuters reported long traffic snarls that resulted in extended waiting times and delays in reaching their destinations. Many expressed frustration as what would normally be short drives turned into prolonged journeys, severely affecting their schedules.
Mukesh, a resident of East of Kailash, shared his experience: “The Sarai Kale Khan flyover was completely jam-packed today. Normally, traveling from East of Kailash to ITO takes around 30 minutes, but due to the heavy traffic congestion, it took me well over an hour. The situation was made even more uncomfortable by the hot and humid conditions, which added to the frustration of being stuck in the gridlock.”
Sukriti, from Chirag Delhi, noted: “The journey from Chirag Delhi to central Delhi normally takes around 20–25 minutes. However, today, heavy traffic had already begun building up near the Lajpat Nagar side, and by the time I reached the Supreme Court area, traffic had slowed to a crawl. What usually is a quick ride ended up taking me close to 50 minutes.”
Traffic Police Response and Monitoring
The Delhi Traffic Police addressed the situation on social media platform X, stating: “As per report of traffic inspector Lajpat Nagar, traffic remains heavy in and around Sunder Nursery due to high weekend footfall at Sunder Nursery, Humayun’s Tomb, and Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah. Additionally, Bharat Tribes Fest is currently ongoing at Sunder Nursery. Traffic staff is deployed on the ground, and traffic is being monitored and regulated.”
This deployment aimed to manage the congestion, but the sheer volume of vehicles and pedestrians overwhelmed the efforts, leading to widespread delays. The combination of tourist attractions and a cultural festival created a perfect storm for traffic chaos in the heart of the capital.
Impact on Daily Commutes and Local Life
The traffic snarls not only affected individual commuters but also disrupted local business operations and emergency services in the area. Residents and visitors alike faced challenges navigating the clogged streets, with many opting to avoid the region altogether to escape the delays.
Authorities have urged the public to plan alternative routes and use public transportation where possible to alleviate the congestion during peak weekend hours. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of urban mobility in densely populated cities like Delhi, especially during events that draw large crowds.
