The Assam government has announced plans to inaugurate two significant infrastructure projects in Guwahati during February, strategically timed ahead of the upcoming assembly elections to prevent operational delays. This move aims to avoid a potential two-month postponement that could occur if the openings were scheduled closer to the election period, which is expected to extend until mid-April.
Key Infrastructure Projects Set for Early Opening
The projects include the 5.4-kilometer Maharaja Prithu Flyover and the Y-shaped railway overbridge at Bharalumukh, both of which have seen construction completed. The Maharaja Prithu Flyover is notable as it is set to become the longest flyover in the state, marking a milestone in Assam's urban development.
Maharaja Prithu Flyover Details
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who conducted a post-midnight inspection of the Maharaja Prithu Flyover on Wednesday, provided insights into the project's timeline. He stated, "Approximately 98% of the work on the Maharaja Prithu flyover will be finalized by the end of February. We intend to open it for light vehicles initially. Full access for all vehicles is planned for March 15; however, delaying until then would bring us uncomfortably close to the assembly elections, necessitating a wait until after Bohag Bihu, celebrated in mid-April. This could cause significant inconvenience to Guwahati residents. Therefore, as a procedural measure, the bridge will be inaugurated on February 28."
The flyover intersects with the existing Anandaram Barua Setu at Chandmari, which connects to RG Baruah Road, with ongoing work at this junction. Sarma emphasized that the flyover's opening will alleviate traffic congestion by distributing vehicles between the elevated corridor and the widened road below.
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, Sarma revealed plans for two additional arms of the flyover. One extension will reach towards Ulubari from the Guwahati Club point, and another will extend towards Rajgarh Road from Chandmari Point. Construction on these expansions is scheduled to commence after the Bohag Bihu festivities.
Bharalumukh Railway Overbridge Update
Regarding the Bharalumukh project, Sarma confirmed that the Y-shaped railway overbridge has been fully completed. It is slated for inauguration on either February 20 or February 22. This structure is designed to eliminate level crossings near the Bharalumukh Police Station, specifically targeting congestion at Gate No. 9 on RK Choudhury Road.
The overbridge connects key points including the KR Choudhury Road tri-junction, Fatasil Chariali, Santipur, and Bharalumukh Police Point, aiming to enhance accessibility and traffic flow in the area. By opening these projects ahead of the election schedule, the Assam government seeks to minimize disruptions and provide immediate relief to Guwahati's commuters, showcasing a proactive approach to urban infrastructure management.
