Government Announces Major Push for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
The Central government is formulating comprehensive plans to significantly expand the nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy revealed on Tuesday. This strategic initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across India as part of broader environmental and sustainable mobility goals.
Addressing Pollution Through Electric Mobility
Speaking at the International Automotive Technology Symposium held at the Pune International Exhibition and Convention Center in Moshi, Minister Kumaraswamy highlighted the urgent need to tackle vehicular pollution. "Public transport vehicles currently contribute approximately 40% of pollution in India," he stated, emphasizing that promoting electric vehicles represents a critical solution to this environmental challenge.
The three-day symposium, organized by the Automotive Research Association of India under the theme 'Innovative Pathways for Safe and Sustainable Mobility', brought together industry experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the future of transportation.
Vision for India's Automotive Future
Minister Kumaraswamy expressed confidence that the symposium would generate valuable insights and innovative ideas to support India's long-term development objectives. "This event will facilitate an exciting exchange of information, creating new knowledge and pathways toward India's 2047 vision of becoming a developed nation and achieving net zero emissions by 2070," he remarked.
During his visit, the minister inaugurated several advanced testing facilities near Pune, including:
- The advanced driver assistance systems' smart city test track
- A comprehensive cylinder testing facility
- A high-energy impact test facility at Takwe
Automotive Sector's Strategic Importance
Kumaraswamy underscored the automotive industry's pivotal role in India's economic growth, particularly in manufacturing, exports, and research. "The sector is increasingly embracing software-led mobility solutions that will define the future of transportation," he noted.
The minister also highlighted upcoming opportunities for the industry, stating that "the automotive sector is poised to benefit significantly from trade agreements with Europe, enabling both domestic expansion and stronger international market presence in coming years."
Symposium Showcases Cutting-Edge Technologies
ARAI Director Reji Mathai provided details about the symposium's extensive programming, which includes:
- More than 250 technical presentations covering advanced safety systems, sustainability measures, and next-generation mobility technologies
- Participation from 275 exhibitors representing 10 different countries
- Dedicated pavilions for startups, autonomous driving technology, and software-defined mobility solutions
- A student poster presentation competition allowing undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral candidates to showcase innovations and engage with industry leaders
The event serves as a crucial platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration as India advances toward its electric mobility and environmental sustainability targets.
