Karnataka Government Plans Statewide Expansion of World Fisheries Day Celebrations
In a significant development for the fisheries sector in Karnataka, Minister of Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Water Transport, Mankal S Vaidya, has announced that World Fisheries Day celebrations will be organised across the state in the coming years. This declaration came during the legislature session in response to a query raised by MLC Ivan D'Souza, who sought clarification on why the event was not celebrated in Mangaluru.
Funding and Event Details for Fisheries Day
The minister provided a detailed breakdown of the government's initiatives and financial allocations for World Fisheries Day. He highlighted that in the fiscal year 2023-24, a festival was held in Bengaluru with a sanction of Rs 1.3 crore. Looking ahead, Rs 9.9 crore has been sanctioned for the event in Uttar Kannada in 2024-25, and Rs 4 crore is allocated for Bengaluru in 2025-26. Vaidya assured that events will be organised at other locations throughout the state to ensure broader participation and awareness.
Substantial Financial Support for Fisheries Sector
Beyond the celebrations, the minister underscored the government's commitment to the fisheries industry through substantial financial releases. In 2024-25, the fisheries department disbursed Rs 334.2 crore to support various initiatives. This follows a release of Rs 342.94 crore in the previous fiscal year, 2023-24, demonstrating ongoing investment in sectoral development.
Sea Ambulance Set to Launch in August
In a move eagerly anticipated by coastal communities, Vaidya confirmed that the much-awaited sea ambulance for coastal districts will be made operational in August. This initiative is expected to enhance emergency medical services in remote coastal areas, addressing critical healthcare needs and improving safety for fishermen and residents.
Sand Pricing Issue Raised by MLC
During the session, MLC Ivan D'Souza also raised concerns regarding sand pricing in Dakshina Kannada district. Quoting Mines and Geology Minister SS Mallikarjun, D'Souza stated that the department has fixed the price for 10 metric tonnes of sand at Rs 13,850. This price includes 5% GST, a service charge of Rs 300, and Rs 2,000 for transportation over a distance of 20 kilometers, highlighting regulatory measures in the mining sector.
The announcements reflect the Karnataka government's proactive approach to bolstering the fisheries sector while addressing infrastructure and pricing issues in coastal regions.
