The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday cleared a farm loan waiver scheme that will benefit around 56 lakh farmers in the state. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Key Features of the Loan Waiver
Under the scheme, loans of up to Rs 2 lakh taken by farmers from nationalised banks, cooperative banks, and cooperative societies will be waived. The waiver is applicable to loans that were overdue as on November 30, 2022. The state government will bear the burden of the loan waiver, which is estimated to be around Rs 18,000 crore.
Eligibility Criteria
- Farmers who have taken loans up to Rs 2 lakh from scheduled commercial banks, cooperative banks, or cooperative societies are eligible.
- The loan must have been overdue as of November 30, 2022.
- Small and marginal farmers will be given priority.
Impact on Farmers
The loan waiver is expected to provide significant relief to farmers who have been struggling with debt. Many farmers in the state have been demanding a loan waiver for a long time. The scheme will help reduce the financial burden on farming families and enable them to access fresh credit for the upcoming sowing season.
Government's Stand
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the government is committed to the welfare of farmers. He added that the loan waiver scheme will be implemented transparently and the benefits will reach the intended beneficiaries. The government has also set up a mechanism to identify eligible farmers and ensure that there are no middlemen involved.
Reactions
Opposition parties have criticised the loan waiver, calling it a political gimmick ahead of the upcoming elections. They have demanded that the government should also waive loans of farmers who have taken loans from private money lenders. However, the government has maintained that the scheme is well-thought-out and will provide maximum benefit to the farming community.
The loan waiver scheme is part of the Maharashtra government's efforts to address the agrarian crisis in the state. The government has also announced other measures such as increasing the minimum support price for crops and providing subsidies on seeds and fertilisers.
Farmers across the state have welcomed the decision. Many hope that the loan waiver will help them get back on their feet and improve their livelihoods. The implementation of the scheme will be closely watched by all stakeholders.
