PUNSUP Urges Farmers to Adopt Mushroom Cultivation with Subsidy

Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation (PUNSUP) Chairman Prabhbir Singh Brar has called on farmers to embrace mushroom cultivation as a means to diversify from traditional farming and boost their incomes. Speaking recently, Brar highlighted that the government is offering a subsidy of up to Rs 80,000 for setting up mushroom production units.

Subsidy Details and Costs

Brar explained that farmers can establish a small mushroom production unit at an estimated cost of around Rs 2 lakh. The Horticulture Department provides a 40 per cent subsidy on the project cost, subject to a maximum limit of Rs 80,000. This financial support aims to lower the entry barrier for farmers interested in this alternative farming practice.

Benefits of Mushroom Cultivation

According to Brar, mushroom cultivation requires significantly less land and water compared to conventional crops. He noted that a small production unit can be set up in an area of about 1,800 square feet, making it particularly suitable for small and marginal farmers. The low-cost nature of the activity can help farmers earn good profits and improve their financial condition.
