Uttar Pradesh Launches Pioneering City Accelerator Program for Rooftop Solar in Kanpur
In a landmark event for Uttar Pradesh, the City Accelerator Program (CAP) under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was officially inaugurated with great fanfare in Kanpur on Monday. This initiative marks the first implementation of such a program in the state, aiming to revolutionize urban energy consumption through solar power.
Collaborative Effort to Drive Solar Adoption
The program was organized through a strategic partnership between the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), in collaboration with UP NEDA. The primary objective is to promote the widespread installation of rooftop solar systems in urban areas and ensure that this sustainable energy solution is accessible to the general public.
During the launch, Rakesh Pandey, Project Officer at UP NEDA, provided comprehensive details about the various awareness campaigns planned under the City Accelerator Program. He emphasized that this initiative is specifically designed to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar technology in cities, actively engage citizens with the scheme, and achieve a substantial reduction in household electricity bills.
Emphasis on Environmental and Economic Benefits
The event featured Neelima Katiyar, MLA, as the chief guest, who delivered an insightful address highlighting critical issues such as carbon emissions and climate change. She underscored the vital importance of solar panels in addressing these challenges, stating that adopting solar energy not only promotes environmental conservation but also ensures that future energy needs are met in a sustainable, secure, and affordable manner.
Katiyar elaborated on how transitioning to solar power can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change while providing long-term economic relief to consumers through lower energy costs.
High-Level Participation and Future Outlook
The occasion was graced by the presence of several key officials, including Deeksha Jain, CDO of Kanpur Nagar, Alok Kumar Singh, Project Director, along with representatives from UP NEDA, DPRO, nodal officers from DISCOM, and other relevant departments. Their collective participation underscores the government's commitment to a coordinated effort in advancing solar energy infrastructure across urban centers.
This launch sets a precedent for other cities in Uttar Pradesh, with the City Accelerator Program expected to serve as a model for integrating renewable energy into urban planning. By fostering public awareness and streamlining access to solar technology, the initiative aims to create a greener, more energy-independent future for the state's residents.
