Uttar Pradesh Achieves Record Rooftop Solar Installations Under National Scheme

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the national leader in rooftop solar installations for the month of March, according to official data released under the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojna'. The state recorded an impressive 52,729 installations in a single month, marking the highest monthly performance by any state since the scheme's inception.

Sustained Excellence and National Ranking

The state has consistently maintained its position among the top two performers since July 2025. With cumulative installations exceeding 4.48 lakh, Uttar Pradesh currently ranks third nationally in total rooftop solar deployments. Officials indicate that if current installation trends continue, the state could potentially move to the second position in the coming months.

March 31 witnessed a particularly remarkable achievement with 3,188 installations completed in a single day, setting a new daily record for the program. The total installed capacity across the state has now reached 1,524.61 megawatts, representing significant progress in renewable energy adoption.

Financial Benefits and Subsidy Distribution

The financial impact of this initiative has been substantial. Approximately Rs 4,000 crore in subsidies have been disbursed to beneficiaries, including Rs 2,985 crore from the central government. The installed capacity currently generates between 68-70 lakh units of electricity daily.

Based on an average electricity tariff of Rs 6-6.5 per unit, this translates to estimated daily savings of Rs 4-4.5 crore through reduced grid consumption. Households consuming up to 300 units monthly are reporting near-zero electricity bills, while others are experiencing reductions ranging from 30-70% in their electricity expenses.

Employment Generation and Environmental Impact

The rooftop solar initiative has created significant employment opportunities, generating approximately 65,000 direct jobs and over one lakh indirect employment positions. More than 5,000 companies have been empanelled with the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) to support implementation.

Environmental benefits are equally noteworthy. The rooftop solar expansion is estimated to save over 6,000 acres of land that would otherwise be required for conventional power generation facilities. Additionally, the program is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 million tonnes of oil equivalent annually, contributing substantially to India's climate goals.

Official Perspective and Future Goals

Inderjit Singh, Director of UPNEDA, attributed the state's success to "strong coordination between policy, technology and field execution". He emphasized that the focus remains on "expanding access while maintaining quality and transparency" in implementation.

Singh asserted that the initiative demonstrates how "distributed solar can deliver both economic savings and energy access at scale", suggesting that Uttar Pradesh's model could serve as a replicable template for other states across India.

The scheme received national recognition during 'Mann Ki Baat', where a farmer from Meerut shared his positive experience of reduced electricity bills and additional income generated through surplus power sales to the grid.

Ambitious Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Uttar Pradesh has set ambitious targets for the rooftop solar program. The state aims to expand the initiative to over 10 lakh households, achieve 4.5 gigawatts of rooftop solar capacity, and ultimately secure the top position nationally in rooftop solar installations in the coming years.

This comprehensive approach to renewable energy adoption positions Uttar Pradesh as a leading state in India's transition toward sustainable energy solutions while delivering tangible economic benefits to its residents.
