Varanasi District Secures Second Prize in National Watershed Development Awards

In a significant recognition of agricultural and environmental conservation efforts, Varanasi district has been honored with the second prize at the national level for its exemplary implementation of the Watershed Development Component under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). The award was presented by Swatantra Dev, the Uttar Pradesh Minister for Water Resources and Flood Control, during the Watershed Festival organized in Lucknow.

Recognition for Land and Water Conservation Work

The award acknowledges the district's outstanding contributions to land and water conservation initiatives, which have played a pivotal role in sustainable agricultural development. According to officials, the comprehensive watershed management work carried out in Varanasi has not only enhanced water availability but also improved soil health and agricultural productivity across the region.

Success Stories of Beneficiaries Highlighted

The district's achievement was further bolstered by the remarkable performances of two key beneficiaries of the scheme. Mamata from Arajiline block and progressive farmer Dhirendra Kumar from Rakhi village in Sevapuri block were specifically recognized for their exceptional contributions.

Dhirendra Kumar utilized the scheme benefits through the revolving fund and Natural Resource Management (NRM) work to establish small enterprises aimed at increasing his income. By constructing bunds for water conservation, he implemented integrated and organic farming practices, leveraging accumulated moisture to achieve a significant boost in agricultural yield and financial returns.

Similarly, Mamata presented a model of livelihood enhancement that has inspired other farmers in the district. Her innovative approaches to utilizing watershed development resources have demonstrated how sustainable practices can lead to economic empowerment and community development.

Impact on District and State Level

The recognition of Varanasi at the national level underscores the successful implementation of PMKSY in Uttar Pradesh. The Watershed Festival in Lucknow served as a platform to celebrate such achievements, highlighting how coordinated efforts in water resource management can transform agricultural landscapes and improve rural livelihoods.

This award not only brings pride to Varanasi but also sets a benchmark for other districts in the state to emulate. The integrated approach combining water conservation with livelihood enhancement has proven to be a winning strategy, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth in the region.
