Court sentences Afreed to 20 years RI for assaulting minor
A local court in Mangaluru has sentenced a 20-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. The convict, identified as Afreed alias Appi, a resident of Kelaginakere, Addoor, Gurupura, had befriended the survivor through Instagram before committing the crime.

According to the prosecution, Afreed contacted the minor on Instagram and gained her trust over several weeks. He then lured her to a secluded location where he sexually assaulted her. The survivor reported the incident to her family, who filed a complaint with the police. The investigation was conducted by the Mangaluru City Police, and charges were filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The fast-track court, presided over by Judge R. Venkatesh, found Afreed guilty of aggravated sexual assault under Section 376(2)(i) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the POCSO Act. The judge emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating that such acts against minors are heinous and warrant severe punishment. The court sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000, with the amount to be given to the survivor.
