In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the police in West Champaran district have made a major seizure, apprehending four individuals and confiscating a large quantity of charas with an estimated international market value of a staggering five crore rupees.

Dramatic Nighttime Arrest on National Highway

The operation unfolded late on Friday night near the Madhopur Azad Nagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Majhauliya police station. According to officials, a police team led by Majhauliya SHO Avnish Kumar was engaged in a routine patrol on the Motihari-Bettiah main road (NH-727) around 8 pm.

Their vigilance paid off when they spotted two motorcycles coming from the direction of Motihari. Upon seeing the police party, the four people on the bikes attempted to flee the scene immediately, arousing strong suspicion. The alert officers gave chase and successfully intercepted and apprehended all four individuals.

Massive Drug Haul and Accused Identified

A subsequent search of their possessions led to the discovery that cemented the police's suspicions. The police recovered 35 separate packets of the narcotic substance charas from their bags. The total weight of the seized contraband was a substantial 20 kilograms.

The arrested accused have been identified as Rupesh Kumar (24) of Loknathpur and Nagendra Thakur of Semrahia village. The other two accused, who were on the second motorcycle, are Chirag Ali Ansari (45) of Mathwa village and Rekha Devi of Bahilwara village. Three of the accused hail from East Champaran district, while Rekha Devi is a resident of Muzaffarpur district.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Action

Bettiah SDPO Vivek Deep, addressing the media on Saturday, confirmed the details of the operation and the immense value of the seizure. He stated that after initial interrogation, a formal case has been registered against the four individuals under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The SDPO further emphasized that the investigation is far from over. The police are intensively questioning the arrested smugglers to uncover the source of this large consignment and its intended destination. Authorities are confident that by investigating these forward and backward linkages, they will be able to identify and arrest other individuals involved in this illicit racket.
