5 Get Life Term for 2019 Kidnapping in Kurukshetra

A local court in Kurukshetra has delivered a stern verdict, sentencing five people to rigorous life imprisonment for their involvement in a kidnapping case from 2019. The convicted include three women and two men, all of whom were found guilty of abducting a man and demanding a hefty ransom.

The Verdict and the Accused

The court pronounced life sentences for all five accused. They were also slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The court made it clear that failure to pay this fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment for each convict.

The convicted individuals hail from different regions:

  • Three women from Paonta Sahib, Yamunanagar, and Mohali.
  • Sarafat Ali, a resident of Yamunanagar.
  • Salinder Singh from Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand.

Additional Punishment for Extortion

In a separate but related charge, the woman from Paonta Sahib faced additional sentencing. She was convicted under Section 387 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt to commit extortion.

For this offence, she received a further five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. Non-payment of this fine will lead to an extra two-month jail term.

Details of the 2019 Kidnapping

The case dates back to May 2019. The group was arrested for allegedly kidnapping the father of a man named Kapil Garg, a resident of Ladwa. The motive was purely financial. After abducting the victim, the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded a ransom of Rs 5.50 lakh for his safe release.

The police investigation led to their arrest, and after a thorough legal process, the court has now handed down its final judgment, bringing a sense of closure to the victim's family.

The ruling underscores the judiciary's firm stance against serious crimes like kidnapping and extortion. The use of rigorous life imprisonment reflects the gravity of the offence, serving as a strong deterrent. This case highlights the effective collaboration between law enforcement and the judicial system in Haryana to deliver justice, even in complex inter-state criminal activities.
