The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Ahilyanagar, Nashik, has made a significant arrest, nabbing two officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) on charges of corruption. An assistant engineer and a wireman were caught for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a local resident.
The Trap: How the Bribe Was Demanded
According to ACB officials, the case revolves around a complainant from Newasa. This individual had set up a mineral water plant at his residence and had installed both a commercial and a domestic electricity meter. The trouble began on December 22, when the accused assistant engineer and wireman visited his home.
During this visit, the officials accused the resident of power theft and issued a severe warning. They stated that he could face a hefty penalty of up to Rs 4 lakh for the alleged violation. The situation escalated on December 25, when the duo allegedly approached the complainant with a deal.
They initially demanded a sum of Rs 2 lakh from him, promising to make the potential penalty disappear. After some negotiation, they reportedly reduced their demand to Rs 1.2 lakh.
The Sting Operation and Arrest
The ACB swung into action after the complainant approached them. A trap was laid for Thursday. As per the plan, the wireman arrived to collect the first installment of the bribe, which amounted to Rs 50,000, on behalf of the assistant engineer.
Deputy SP Ajit Tripute of ACB Ahilyanagar confirmed that the wireman was caught red-handed while accepting the cash. Following his arrest, the assistant engineer was also taken into custody. The operation was executed successfully, leading to the immediate apprehension of both government employees.
Legal Repercussions and Case Filed
The ACB has registered a formal case against the two MSEDCL officials at the Newasa police station. They have been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
This arrest highlights the ongoing vigilance of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Maharashtra against corrupt practices within public utilities. It serves as a stern warning to officials who might attempt to exploit their position for personal gain, especially when dealing with allegations like power theft.
