Berhampur: A man allegedly involved in the brutal attack on a 30-year-old man at Ambika Nagar under Bada Bazar police station limits here, suffered bullet injuries in police firing, hours after the Sunday night incident.
The accused, identified as Jagannath Sahu (33), alias Jaga, the prime accused in the assault case, received bullet injuries in both his legs in police firing near Sukunda. He was leading police to show the weapon of offence in the attack on a 30-year old man and on the way, he attacked the police team with bombs hidden near the spot, said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M on Monday.
Police fired in self-defence and he suffered injuries in both legs, he said. He is now undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and his condition is stated to be stable. Jaga was a history-sheeter and allegedly involved in nine different cases.
Late on Sunday evening, Jaga, along with his brother, allegedly brutally hacked Mangala Behera (30) of Laxmi Nursingh Street with sharp weapons in public view at Ambika Nagar. The grievously injured Behera was admitted to medical college and hospital here. The video of the brutal attack went viral on social media.
Preliminary probe has revealed old enmity between the accused and victim. Mangala was arrested for a bomb attack on Jaga's house three months ago. He got bail only four days ago, said police.
On May 17, a group of men had beaten up a young couple at Giri Road area here under Berhampur Town police station limits. Police have arrested four people in this incident based on the complaint lodged by the mother of victim, Umesh Rath, of Hillpatna.
