Agra Woman's Second Elopement Sparks Police Investigation
In a startling repeat of events that captured public attention last year, a 41-year-old woman from Agra has once again vanished under controversial circumstances. Apna Devi, who previously made headlines by running away with her daughter's 20-year-old would-be husband, has now disappeared with her brother-in-law, prompting a fresh police complaint and investigation.
Husband Files Detailed Complaint with Authorities
The latest episode unfolded when Rahul Kumar, now a year older than during the previous incident, approached police at Dado thana in Aligarh district on Wednesday. In his formal complaint, Kumar detailed how he used to sell clothes at the India-Nepal border and returned home on February 6 to discover his wife missing.
"Around 8:30am on Feb 6, I left for the border. My wife was alone back at home. And when I returned, I found that she had disappeared," Kumar stated in his complaint. He further alleged that Apna Devi had taken approximately Rs 2 lakh in cash along with valuable jewellery from their residence.
Kumar identified the man his wife allegedly eloped with as Devendra, her brother-in-law who is in his mid-30s. The complaint specifically requests police to "take legal action against her" for the disappearance and alleged theft.
Police Confirm Receiving Conflicting Accounts
Law enforcement officials have confirmed receiving Kumar's complaint and have initiated an investigation into the matter. DSP Sanjeev Kumar Tomar, who oversees the Dado area, revealed additional context about the couple's living situation prior to the incident.
"We've received a complaint and are looking into the latest incident," stated another police officer from Aligarh. "Rahul Kumar was staying with Apna Devi somewhere near the Nepal border. Both belong to Aligarh."
Complicating matters further, police disclosed that Apna Devi herself approached authorities on Thursday with a contradictory version of events. According to her statement to officers, she "left" Kumar because he was regularly harassing her, presenting a different perspective on what motivated her departure.
Echoes of Previous Controversial Elopement
The current incident vividly recalls the dramatic events of last April, when the same woman, then 40 years old, disappeared with Rahul Kumar just nine days before her daughter's scheduled wedding. That case, registered in the district's Mandrak area, became a major talking point throughout the region.
The previous elopement occurred on April 6 when Kumar, who was supposed to marry Apna Devi's daughter, left home under the pretext of shopping for wedding attire. Later that evening, he called his father with a cryptic message: "I'm leaving. Don't try to find me." Around the same time, the bride's mother vanished without explanation.
Reports from that incident indicated the pair left with approximately Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and jewellery, creating shock and distress for both families involved. During police interactions following that episode, Apna Devi had declared that "she wanted to live with Kumar for the rest of her life."
