Ahmedabad Police Arrests 21-Year-Old Exam Aspirant in Major Drug Bust
In a significant crackdown on narcotics, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Ahmedabad city police apprehended a 21-year-old competitive exam aspirant on Wednesday for allegedly possessing mephedrone (MD) valued at approximately Rs 10 lakh. The arrest occurred near the riverfront road in Ellisbridge, with officials confirming the details on Thursday.
Operation and Seizure Details
Acting on a credible tip-off, SOG personnel intercepted the suspect, identified as Nayyar Raza Mufid Ahmed Qureshi, in the vicinity of the Mahakali Mata temple, located behind Patang Hotel on the road leading to the Sabarmati riverfront. During a thorough search, police recovered 94.86 grams of mephedrone, with an estimated street value of Rs 9.48 lakh. Including other seized items, the total value of the muddamal (case property) was assessed at Rs 9.54 lakh, according to officers involved in the operation.
Background and Investigation Findings
Qureshi, originally from Abu Road in Rajasthan and currently residing near Kalupur Tower in Ahmedabad, was enrolled in TT examination coaching classes at a private institute in the city. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly disclosed to police that he had procured the contraband from one Sohail Baloch, also a resident of Abu Road. Investigators revealed that the drugs were transported to Ahmedabad by Baloch along with another associate, Naeem Sheikh. A portion of the consignment was allegedly supplied to a local contact, Salman Sheikh, while the remaining quantity was sold in small packets to customers across the city to fund Qureshi's personal expenses.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
A formal case has been registered at the DCB police station under Sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in urban areas, particularly targeting networks that exploit young individuals for distribution purposes.
