Ajmer Businessman Targeted with Rs 2 Crore Extortion and Death Threat
A prominent businessman and BJP member in Ajmer found himself at the center of a terrifying extortion plot on Thursday, receiving a death threat and a demand for Rs 2 crore from individuals claiming affiliation with the notorious Rohit Gidhara gang. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local business community and prompted a swift police response.
Threatening Call Details and Gang Claims
According to police reports, Jitendra Rangwani, a 43-year-old liquor contractor who operates four shops in Ajmer, was at a salon when he received a WhatsApp call from an international number in the evening. The caller identified himself as Rahul Patepuria and asserted that his associate was Virendra Charan, both allegedly part of the Rohit Gidhara gang.
The extortionists demanded a staggering sum of Rs 2 crore from Rangwani, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid promptly. In a chilling reference to past violence, the caller warned that the "terror of Kuchaman Rulania" would be repeated, adding a layer of psychological intimidation to the financial demand.
Police Investigation and FIR Registration
Following the threatening call, Rangwani immediately lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at the Haribhau Upadhyaya police station. Police have registered a formal case and are actively working to trace the origin of the international call, which adds complexity to the investigation.
The caller further attempted to legitimize the threat by instructing Rangwani to visit the Superintendent of Police office to verify his voice, a move seen as an additional tactic to instill fear and compliance. This detail underscores the calculated nature of the extortion attempt.
Background of the Victim and Political Connections
Jitendra Rangwani is not only a successful businessman in the liquor trade but also has political ties, having contested municipal elections on a BJP ticket five years ago. His profile as a public figure and entrepreneur may have made him a target for such criminal activities.
Police are exploring all angles, including potential motives related to his business operations or political affiliations. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by business owners in dealing with organized crime and extortion rackets.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
This incident has raised significant safety concerns among local residents and business owners in Ajmer. The brazen nature of the threat, coupled with the gang's reputation, has prompted calls for enhanced security measures and vigilance.
Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious communications and are stepping up efforts to combat such criminal networks. The investigation remains ongoing, with police committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring community safety.
