An Ajnala court on Friday ordered that the trial against jailed Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh in connection with the 2023 police station attack case be transferred to the Amritsar sessions court. The next hearing will take place on May 2, marking the formal start of the trial.
Charge-Sheet Presented
The order came after the police presented a charge-sheet before the court, and Amritpal Singh appeared before it via a video link. He is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh Central Jail. At the last hearing, the court had remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
Background of the Case
On February 23, 2023, Amritpal Singh, chief of Waris Punjab De, along with hundreds of supporters, attacked the Ajnala police station to get one of his aides released from police custody. The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of a sitting MP and the violent nature of the incident.
The transfer of the trial to the Amritsar sessions court is expected to expedite the legal proceedings. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 2, when the trial will formally commence.
