An Army Havildar has made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Havildar Gajendra Singh of the Special Forces succumbed to his injuries on Monday. He was among eight soldiers injured in a fierce encounter with terrorists in Kishtwar district.

The incident occurred on the night of January 18, 2026, in the Singpura area of Kishtwar. Terrorists, positioned on higher ground, launched a sudden attack on approaching search parties. They used grenades and AK-47 fire to target the security forces.

Security Forces Resume Search After Night Halt
On Monday morning, security forces resumed their search operations in the dense forests of Chhatru area. The operation had been suspended overnight due to darkness. No contact has been made with the terrorists for the past twelve hours, according to sources.
Local villagers played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath. They helped bring the injured soldiers down from the forests. The injured personnel were then evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
Terrorist Groups Active in Chenab Valley
Intelligence sources indicate that approximately three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists are currently holed up in the area. Furthermore, two distinct terrorist groups have been active in this region for nearly two years.
These groups are reportedly led by Saifullah and Adil, both Pakistani nationals. Security agencies believe that around thirty-five Pakistani terrorists are hiding in the dense forests of Doda and Kishtwar districts.
Winter conditions in the mountainous Chenab Valley region create unique challenges. Snow cover limits the movement area for terrorists. This seasonal factor provides security forces with opportunities to corner and neutralize these threats.
The Army's statement paid solemn tribute to Havildar Gajendra Singh. "We honour his indomitable courage, valour and selfless devotion to duty," the statement read. It further expressed solidarity with the bereaved family during this time of profound grief.
