High-Value Silver Trophies Stolen from Prestigious Pune Army Institute
In a shocking security breach, six silver trophies with a combined value of ₹8.39 lakh have been stolen from the mess hall of the Army Institute of Physical Training (AIPT) in Pune. Police investigators are strongly suspecting this to be an "inside job" given the institute's formidable security perimeter and restricted access protocols.
Timeline of Discovery and Police Complaint
The theft is believed to have occurred during an extended window between February 13 and March 15. However, the crime remained undetected until recently when a mess secretary opened a display cabinet for routine cleaning and discovered the prestigious awards were missing. Following an internal inquiry by Army authorities, a formal First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at the Wanowarie Police Station on April 6. The complaint was filed by Army Havildar Deepak Sispal.
Investigation Focuses on Internal Involvement
Assistant Police Inspector S. Mahadik, who is leading the investigation, stated that preliminary findings strongly point toward internal involvement. "The campus is protected by a high compound wall and barbed wire fencing, making external intrusion highly unlikely. We have recorded statements from several staff members," Mahadik explained. Investigators have begun questioning civilian staffers employed at the mess on contract basis.
Critical Security Gap Identified: Lack of Internal CCTV
A significant security vulnerability identified during the probe is the complete absence of an internal CCTV network within the sprawling 60-acre campus. "A premier institute of this nature should have comprehensive surveillance for safety and security. We have advised the administration to install cameras immediately. The investigation is ongoing," Mahadik added. Currently, cameras are only installed at entry points.
Institute's Prestige and Security Protocols
The AIPT is a prestigious Indian Army centre dedicated to training physical instructors, housing world-class facilities including battle proficiency courses, boxing arenas, and gymnastics courts. A senior officer at the institute noted that all contractual staff undergo mandatory police verification before hiring. "Only individuals with clean records are employed. However, it is difficult to anticipate criminal intent after a person has joined the workforce," the officer stated.
While officials maintained that standard security measures like access control and regular patrolling were operational, they acknowledged the pressing need for modernization. "We are now undertaking a comprehensive security audit and will expand surveillance coverage across the entire campus," a source revealed. The Army authorities initially conducted their own internal investigation but handed the case over to civil police when they were unable to identify the culprit.
