Nashik Astrologer Ashok Kharat Faces Third Case as SIT Prepares Custody Bid
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing multiple cases against astrologer Ashok Kharat is set to seek his police custody in a third case on Thursday. This development follows a court order on Wednesday that remanded Kharat to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a second case registered against him.
Court Proceedings and Custody Details
In the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate B N Ichpurani, Kharat was produced via video conferencing to avoid security logistics issues due to a heavy crowd of lawyers and locals. The SIT, represented by APP Ravindra Bagade, successfully secured 14-day judicial custody for Kharat in the second case while reserving the prerogative to seek police custody later.
Senior police officials confirmed that Kharat will be taken to the Nashik Road Central Prison. From there, he will be re-arrested in the third case to facilitate his production in court for the police custody hearing. Kharat has been under arrest since March 17 and was in SIT custody for the second case from April 2 until Wednesday.
Charges in the Third Case
The SIT also obtained the court's permission to arrest Kharat in the third case, which is registered at the Sarkarwada police station. This case involves serious allegations, including:
- Rape and outraging modesty, punishable under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
- Violations under the Maharashtra Prevention of Black Magic Act.
- Additional accusations from the complainant of money laundering and using toy snakes and tigers to scare people for extortion.
SIT's Investigation Strategy
SIT officials have stated their intention to take custody of Kharat in every case they are investigating, underscoring the breadth and seriousness of the allegations. This approach highlights the team's commitment to a thorough probe into the multiple charges faced by the astrologer.
The use of video conferencing for court appearances reflects efforts to manage security concerns amid public interest, while the legal proceedings continue to unfold with significant implications for Kharat's custody status.
