Assam Police Arrests Driver for 50 Stolen LPG Cylinders

Guwahati: Assam Police arrested a truck driver for transporting 50 empty LPG cylinders that were suspected to be stolen in Kamrup district on Tuesday. The operation was carried out by officers from Chhaygaon Police Station.

Operation Details

Chhaygaon PS officer-in-charge (OC) Bijoy Duarah stated that the operation was based on specific intelligence. “The truck was stationed near Udmuri Chowk, and during the verification process, the driver could not provide valid documents or give any proper reply to our questions,” the OC said.

Driver Identification

The driver has been identified as Zahid Khan, a resident of the Mohimari area in Kamrup district. According to the OC, Khan was transporting these cylinders from Meghalaya and was headed towards Goroimari, also in Kamrup district.

Illegal Trade Concerns

“Empty cylinders have significant market value, as they can be refilled and sold to agencies or even on the black market. This has encouraged illegal trade and made it easier for such cylinders to circulate among people,” the OC added.

Seizure and Legal Action

The police have seized the cylinders and the truck. Further investigation is underway to trace the source and intended recipients of the cylinders. Authorities are also looking into possible links with larger criminal networks involved in the illegal LPG trade.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of theft and illegal trading of LPG cylinders in the region, which poses safety risks and economic losses. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to cylinder transportation.
