Auto Driver's Drastic Action Shocks Chitradurga

A tragic incident unfolded in Chitradurga on Sunday when an autorickshaw driver set himself on fire following heated arguments with police officials over an alleged case of drunken driving. The driver, identified as Tippeswamy, now fights for his life with 50% burns at a private hospital in neighboring Davanagere.

The Fateful Confrontation and Aftermath

According to police reports, the confrontation began when officers apprehended Tippeswamy near Town Circle, alleging he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver vehemently denied these charges, leading to a verbal exchange between him and the police personnel.

In a shocking turn of events, approximately one hour after the initial argument, Tippeswamy returned to the same location, poured petrol over himself, and set himself ablaze in a public display of desperation.

Medical Emergency and Police Response

The severely burned driver received initial treatment at Chitradurga Hospital before being referred to SS Hospital in Davanagere for advanced medical care. Medical authorities describe his condition as critical.

SP Ranjit Kumar Bandaru addressed the media, confirming that police plan to register a case of drunken driving while also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. "If any misconduct by the police was proved, then action would be taken against the cop," Bandaru assured.

Conflicting Narratives and Community Response

A police source presented a different perspective, suggesting confusion surrounds the incident. "Though police performed their duty, the driver tried to intimidate them," the source claimed, adding that a case of attempt to commit suicide in a public place would be pursued.

The source further stated, "We impose fines for traffic violations. In this case, negligence is more evident than police misconduct."

In response to the tragedy, an association of auto drivers has demanded Rs 25 lakh compensation for the distress caused to Tippeswamy, who is reported to be a father of two sons.

The incident has raised serious questions about police-public interactions and the extreme measures individuals might take when feeling cornered by authority figures.
