Basti Gangrape Horror: Fiancé's Resilience Leads to Swift Police Action and Arrests
In a shocking incident that underscores both brutality and remarkable resilience, a young woman was allegedly gangraped by five men while en route to a temple with her fiancé in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district. Defying deep-rooted social stigma, the fiancé stood unwaveringly by the survivor, actively assisted in identifying the perpetrators, and ensured prompt police intervention that resulted in multiple arrests within a day.
Details of the Temple Trip Turned Nightmare
The horrific event occurred on April 3 when the woman, in her twenties and a resident of Lalganj area, was traveling with her fiancé, also in his early twenties, to a Shiva temple located within the jurisdiction of Munderwa police station. The couple was proceeding toward the temple via a canal road when five men riding three motorcycles intercepted them.
According to the formal complaint lodged with authorities, the accused initially questioned the couple and even spoke to the woman's parents over the phone. They then deceitfully misled the pair under the pretext of helping them reach the temple, made them sit on their bikes and scooter, and took control of the couple's own motorcycle.
Orchard Assault and Video Threat
Instead of directing them to the temple, the men allegedly drove the couple to an isolated orchard. There, the fiancé was held hostage at a distance while the woman was subjected to gangrape by all five accused. In a further act of intimidation, the perpetrators recorded a video of the assault and threatened to make it go viral if the matter was reported to the police.
Fiancé's Determined Pursuit of Justice
Rather than abandoning the survivor amid the trauma, the fiancé took it upon himself to seek justice. For four consecutive days following the incident, he accompanied the woman across various villages in the area, diligently attempting to trace the accused. During this intensive search, he spotted one of the suspects and discreetly followed him to gather crucial details about his identity and whereabouts.
Through persistent and courageous efforts, the couple successfully managed to identify all five accused individuals. On Thursday, they approached the Munderwa police station and lodged a formal complaint, setting the legal process in motion.
Swift Police Response and Arrests
Acting immediately on the complaint, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and formed multiple specialized teams to trace the accused. Within just 24 hours, four of the accused were arrested following a late-night operation conducted near the Ichadwa Pul Kuria area.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sugriv (22) of Senduriya, Sachin (22) and Pawan (22) of Amardobha under Munderwa, and Shivpujan (24) of Kaithwalia under Lalganj police station. Authorities also seized a tablet found in their possession during the operation.
The fifth accused has been positively identified, and police teams are currently conducting intensive raids to apprehend him at the earliest opportunity.
Official Statement and Medical Examination
Additional Superintendent of Police Shyamkant confirmed that an FIR was registered immediately after the complaint was received and four dedicated police teams were deployed for swift action. He stated, "The survivor has undergone a comprehensive medical examination. Four accused have been arrested within 24 hours, and concerted efforts are underway to arrest the fifth accused at the earliest."
This case highlights not only the grave issue of sexual violence but also the powerful role of supportive partners in navigating the aftermath and ensuring accountability through the legal system.
