Bathinda Sacrilege Incident Reported Hours Before Punjab Governor's Key Assent

In a disturbing development, an incident of sacrilege was reported from Bathinda on the intervening night of April 18 and 19. This occurred just hours before Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria granted his assent to the 'Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Bill', highlighting tensions around religious sentiments in the region.

Details of the Alleged Sacrilege in Gopal Nagar

According to police reports, a woman allegedly entered a house in the Gopal Nagar locality of Bathinda by scaling the boundary wall. Once inside, she tore photos of deities that were displayed within the home. The woman reportedly removed the pictures and threw them out of the house, causing distress to the residents.

Narinder Singh, SP (City) of Bathinda, provided further clarification on the sequence of events. He stated that police received information indicating the woman scaled the outer wall to access the ground-floor courtyard of the house with the intent to steal. However, she was unable to proceed beyond the courtyard area.

"She removed some photos of deities from the wall and threw these out, even as the members of the family woke up," said SP Narinder Singh, describing the immediate aftermath of the intrusion.

Arrest and Legal Action Following the Incident

The woman has been identified as Sazia, wife of Amarjit Singh. She has been arrested by Bathinda police in connection with this incident. Authorities have registered a case against her at the Bathinda Canal Colony police station.

The charges filed include:

  • House trespass
  • Violation of Section 299 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religion or religious beliefs

Police officials noted that it is said she is mentally unstable, but that will be verified as part of their ongoing investigation into the matter.

Timing Coincides with Governor's Action on Religious Legislation

This incident gained additional significance due to its timing relative to political developments. Mere hours after the Bathinda sacrilege was reported, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria granted his assent to the 'Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Bill'.

This legislation aims to strengthen protections for religious texts and sentiments, making the Bathinda incident particularly noteworthy as it underscores the ongoing challenges in this sensitive area. The proximity of these events has drawn attention to the complex interplay between law enforcement, mental health considerations, and religious sensitivities in contemporary Punjab.

Authorities continue to investigate the Bathinda case while verifying the mental state of the accused woman. The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between individual actions and community religious sentiments in today's society.
