Elderly Man Shot and Family Assaulted in Begusarai Over Wheat Harvest Dispute

A violent altercation erupted in Begusarai district on Monday, resulting in the shooting of an elderly man and the assault of his family members. The incident occurred in Rasalpur Jokia village, located under the Bhagwanpur police station area, and stemmed from a long-standing dispute over the harvesting of wheat crops on a contested plot of land.

Details of the Violent Confrontation

According to police reports, 80-year-old Upendra Choudhary was involved in a bitter dispute with members of his own clan regarding a six-acre agricultural plot. Upendra claimed to have cultivated wheat on this land during the current season. On Monday, he received information that the opposing party had initiated the harvesting of the crop without his consent.

Family members stated that Upendra, accompanied by his 30-year-old son Santosh Choudhary and his 70-year-old brother Umesh Choudhary, proceeded to the field to halt the unauthorized harvesting. "When they objected to the harvesting, the accused individuals opened fire at Upendra and physically assaulted his son and brother," a family member recounted. "It is important to note that the district court had previously ruled in Upendra's favor regarding this land dispute."

Police Investigation and Recovery of Evidence

Following the incident, all three injured individuals were promptly admitted to Begusarai Sadar Hospital for medical treatment. Begusarai Superintendent of Police Manish confirmed that law enforcement officials responded to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation.

"Our team recovered one live cartridge and one empty cartridge from the spot of the incident," SP Manish stated. "The case is currently under active investigation, and we are pursuing all leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved in this violent act."

Background of the Land Dispute

The conflict revolves around the ownership and cultivation rights of the six-acre land parcel. Upendra Choudhary's assertion that he had sown wheat on the property this season was the immediate trigger for the confrontation. The prior court ruling in his favor adds a legal dimension to the dispute, highlighting the tensions that can arise in rural agricultural communities over land and crop rights.

This incident underscores the severe consequences that can result from unresolved land disputes, particularly during harvest seasons when the value of crops is at its peak. The local community in Begusarai is now awaiting further developments as the police continue their investigation into this shocking case of violence.
