Belagavi POCSO Court Delivers 20-Year Sentence in Minor Assault Case
A special court designated under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Belagavi has handed down a significant verdict, sentencing a 28-year-old man to two decades of rigorous imprisonment for the heinous crimes of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a minor girl. The convicted individual, identified as Devraj Ashok Metri, a resident of Hunashyal village in Mudalagi taluk, faced the full force of the law following a thorough judicial process.

According to the prosecution's case, Metri was acquainted with the victim for nearly two years prior to the incident. He allegedly lured the minor girl with a false promise of marriage, exploiting her trust. The girl went missing on September 14, 2023, prompting her distressed parents to file a formal complaint with the authorities.
During the subsequent investigation, led by Inspector Shrishail Byakud, police uncovered a chilling sequence of events. It was revealed that Metri kidnapped the girl using a motorcycle, transporting her to a newly rented house where he committed the sexual assault. Following this, he took her by train from Belagavi to Bengaluru, further complicating the search efforts. However, his attempt to evade justice was short-lived.
While returning via Hubballi, Metri was apprehended by police near Koujalagi village on September 17, 2023. The swift arrest marked a critical turning point in the case, allowing for a detailed probe into the allegations.
Court Proceedings and Verdict
Inspector Byakud meticulously investigated the matter and submitted a comprehensive chargesheet to the court. The trial was presided over by Judge CM Pushpalata, who evaluated the evidence presented. The court found Metri guilty based on the compelling testimony of nine witnesses, the submission of 44 documents, and 13 material exhibits, all of which corroborated the prosecution's narrative.
