Customs officers at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport made a major wildlife seizure on January 17. They intercepted a consignment arriving from Bangkok at Terminal 2. The officials discovered thirty-five wild animals hidden inside passenger baggage. Many of these creatures are exotic and protected species.
Three Passengers from Maharashtra Detained
The seizure followed the interception of three passengers. Authorities identified them as Aryan Gite, aged 21, Alsana Shaikh, 26, and Zareen Shaikh, 46. All three individuals are residents of Thane district in Maharashtra. Customs officers found the animals concealed within their luggage during a routine inspection.
List of Seized Animals Includes Rare Species
The confiscated consignment contained a variety of rare animals. Officials listed squirrel monkeys, green and yellow iguanas, albino iguanas, and blue iguanas. The haul also included Abert's squirrels, Patagonian hares, and albino sugar gliders. Several animals were already dead at the time of seizure. This tragic outcome points to poor transport conditions and possible cruelty during the smuggling attempt.
Violation of International and National Laws
Customs authorities confirmed the illegal nature of this shipment. The import violated the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as Cites. It also breached India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Squirrel monkeys and iguanas appear on Cites Appendix II, requiring special permits for trade. Blue iguanas enjoy the highest level of international protection. Some species also fall under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, making unauthorized import a punishable offence.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Officials detained the three accused individuals immediately. They booked them under relevant provisions of the Customs Act and the Wildlife Protection Act. Authorities launched a full investigation to trace the source of these animals. They aim to establish whether an organized wildlife trafficking network operates behind this incident. The accused individuals received bail later in the legal process.
Animals Handed Over to Wildlife Authorities
Customs officers transferred the seized animals to appropriate wildlife authorities. These experts will provide necessary care and complete proper documentation. They will also determine further action for the surviving creatures. The investigation into this wildlife smuggling case continues actively.
