A 22-year-old man employed at a four-wheeler showroom in Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, has been formally booked by police for driving an electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) while under the influence of alcohol. The incident, which resulted in significant property damage and a pedestrian injury, unfolded on the evening of April 12, highlighting serious lapses in judgment and safety.
Details of the Reckless Incident
According to authorities, the accused, identified as Abhilash, works as a staffer at the Mahindra Showroom located in Garudacharpalya. His role involved assisting customers with test drives. On the fateful day, Abhilash was reportedly angered after being denied access to the electric SUV due to his intoxicated state. Seizing an opportunity when the showroom closed and staff were preparing to depart, he took the keys and embarked on an unauthorized joyride.
However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Upon reaching the main road, Abhilash lost command of the high-performance electric vehicle. The ensuing chaos saw the SUV ram into four parked four-wheelers, causing substantial damage to each. Additionally, a 31-year-old man walking near the pavement sustained injuries in the accident, adding a grave human cost to the episode.
Aftermath and Legal Action
In the immediate aftermath, angry passersby confronted Abhilash at the scene, leading to an altercation where he was beaten up. He was subsequently hospitalized for his injuries. Following his discharge on Friday, Abhilash was summoned to the Mahadevapura traffic police station, where officials formally booked him for driving under the influence of alcohol.
An investigating officer provided insights into the motive, stating, "Abhilash was frustrated about not being allowed to drive the electric SUV because he had consumed alcohol. In a fit of rage, he took the keys after hours and drove off, but his impaired condition led to the loss of control and the subsequent collisions." The case underscores the dangers of drunk driving, particularly with powerful electric vehicles, and raises questions about security protocols at automotive showrooms.
