Violence Erupts at Bengaluru Central Prison Over Entry Dispute
A routine order for inmates to return to their barracks turned violent at Bengaluru Central Prison. Two undertrial prisoners allegedly abused and physically assaulted an assistant jailor during the confrontation.
Delayed Complaint Filed After Senior Consultations
Assistant jailor Murthy S filed a formal complaint on January 16 at Parappana Agrahara police station. The incident actually occurred on the afternoon of January 7. Murthy explained the delay in reporting the attack. He needed time to discuss the serious matter with senior prison officials before proceeding with a formal complaint.
"I took time to speak with higher authorities before deciding to lodge a formal complaint," Murthy told investigating officers.
The Violent Confrontation Details
According to the police complaint, the trouble started around 3 PM. A group of inmates created significant disturbance when prevented from entering an office handling undertrial prisoner matters. Murthy stopped them, explaining they needed prior permission from the concerned officer.
The inmates insisted on entering anyway. Two prisoners identified as Anand Veeratte Gowda and Abdul Ghani then allegedly abused Murthy verbally. The situation escalated quickly. Gowda reportedly kicked the chair where Murthy was sitting before physically attacking the assistant jailor.
Murthy noted that such incidents involving abuse and attacks on prison staff occur with some frequency inside the facility.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Parappana Agrahara police registered a case against both inmates under Section 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This section specifically addresses assault or use of criminal force against public servants to prevent them from performing official duties.
An investigating officer clarified the arrest procedure. Since both accused individuals already reside in prison custody, their arrest will be formally recorded within the system. The police will continue their investigation and prepare to file a chargesheet in due course.
The officer stated clearly: "We will continue the investigation and file the chargesheet."
This incident highlights ongoing security challenges within prison facilities. It raises questions about staff safety protocols and inmate management procedures at correctional institutions.
